How to define Writer
A writer is anyone who creates a written work, though the word usually designates those who write creatively or professionally, as well as those who have written in many different forms.
A Writer – a person who is able to write and has written something
A writer is a person for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people… Thomas Mann
writing – the act of creating written works; “writing was a form of therapy for him”
writing – the work of a writer; anything expressed in letters of the alphabet (especially when considered from the point of view of style and effect); “the writing in her novels is excellent”; “that editorial was a fine piece of writing

What does it mean for me to say I’m a writer? It means a long held dream given its rightful place. It means I’m owning more of the pieces of myself.. what makes me tick, excites me,describes how I view the world around me.
To proclaim “I’m a writer” is pretty bold, because I attribute that title with success… of the published kind. Can you be a writer if no one is reading your material? Am I a writer by virtue of publishing my words here on this blog? No, that makes me a blogger and I suspect some would argue they’re not the same.
When I listed myself as an aspiring writer recently I was offering up my dream, my desire and holding my breath in case someone challenged that statement. If self definition is the name of the game then no one can challenge me. I am what I say I am.. what I choose to be and what I create.
I am creating a Writer. Word by word, page by page, day by day. I hope to see my pages published. I hope to have someone say of me, She’s a pretty good writer. And, for now I find satisfaction in writing just for writing. For me. Those times when the words just flow and they look right and sound right.. pure bliss.

Good question, but I think it goes hand in hand with the phrase ” does a that falls in a forest, make a sound?” Yes, it does, IMO. I writer is someone who writes, no matter if it is published, but saves and collects their writings.
The Thomas Mann quote seems backward to me. I think it would be the opposite. Yes, a writer is probably his/her own worst critic, but their love for the written word would make it easier for them to write, even if they personally need to continually re-write something until they are satisfied. Maybe he was referring to the end product.
Jill,
I think Mann refers to that self-critical piece many writers have which make them question and challenge their own work. But, I don’t know.. it seemed an interesting quote so I included it.
No offense but your writing is bland and boring.
Kathy,
None taken. I invite you to find another blog to read that is more to your liking.
how much of this writer have you read to have such a boring response?
Kathy…why didn’t you leave a link so you can show us a bit of your writing?? No offense, but I think you’re rude.
I am a dancer the moment I wake up and probably even when I sleep. Its in my soul as writing is in yours whether you are “published” with a new york house or not. And…its a great question to add to my who are you query. thanks.
sure, not exactly sure what I might have done but….
Dunno if I’m sure of what I am, I suppose if people want to read the book I’m a writer and if no one wants to read it I’m an aspirer…
so you tell me… would you read it???

In spite of what I might have said, I think the only person who can define someone as a writer is oneself. Several months out, I am a writer. I aspire to be a good writer, a published writer, but regardless I am.
I read your first post… looks interesting, though admittedly I’m not a fantasy writer or reader. I think we just keep going, doing what we love.
Thank you for coming by and commenting.
Thanks

true, yet me call me a romantic but I think writing is like music, when you write you show a part of yourself that was hidden, when you play an instrument you express a feiling you had forgoten… though it’s lovelly on its own, yet it’s even better when you can share it ^^
